There are many reasons for nations going to war. These include wealth, power, to gain land, to aid others, to defend land, politics, freedom, and more so in the past, religion. However, many of these cause war simply because people are unable or refuse to look past the differences between themselves and others.

ReligionIn the past and today, to a lesser extent, there have been wars over religion; a few examples of these would be: the French Wars of Religion, the Crusades, and the Lebanese Civil War.

Protection of a CountryMany wars have been fought in protection of a place from and invading force. E.G. The Russians fought against the German invasion of Russia in WWII.
